Bucket List

Mt Olympus, known as ”The Playground of the Gods”, is a beautiful and exciting mountain for intermediate skiers. What it lacks in size it more than makes up for in adventure, there is absolutely no grooming and 90% of the terrain is considered intermediate or advanced. Due to it's small amount of beginner terrain it is relatively uncrowded, meaning you are likely to continue to find untouched trails well after they would be gone at a traditional resort.

Mt Olympus is also an excellent starting point for ski touring—granting access to Mt Olympus' summit (and its accompanying lines!) or to other club areas such as Mt Cheeseman, Broken River, or Craigieburn Valley. If you are looking for accommodation, the Top Hut is a ski-in, ski-out lodge halfway up the basin right at the top of the access tow. It offers a unique accommodation experience. It is a full service alpine lodge it has an in-house chef, bar, and even offers New Zealand's highest outdoor hot tub allowing you to take in the entirety of the New Zealand night sky and kick back and relax. After dinner the party starts—while a brave few decide to go night skiing, the majority settle in with some drinks as the shotskis come out and the dance floor fills.

If Mt. Olympus sounds like a walk in the park—Craigieburn Valley is your next best spot. Another entirely off-piste ski area, Craigieburn caters primarily to the die hard and exceedingly fit skiers. Nicknamed “The Big One”, Craigieburn has a wonderfully varied terrain suitable for even the most experienced of skiers. If you come to the unfortunate conclusion that the Craigieburn runs are too much to handle, a 15 minute hike will bring you to the Broken River area (though it is by no means an “easy” area.)

Craigieburn is another excellent jumping off point for ski touring. It will take a fair bit of trekking to reach some of the areas—but you will find copious amounts of untouched snow that will prove to be well worth the trek.
