Learn the Ropes
Temple Basin provides the perfect setting to learn the ropes in alpine recreation.
To get to the ski area you park your car or get a ride to the gear lift, offload your ski and overnight equipment to be transported to the top and enjoy a 45 minute walk up the track. While the walk is a workout it sure gives a feeling of leaving the world behind, with beautiful views in the heart of the Southern Alps. It also gives the benefit of not having to negotiate an access road in a vehicle!
Temple Basin is an off-piste paradise, renowned for steep, rocky big-mountain terrain. There is plenty of intermediate terrain to build confidence and for beginners there’s a snowy knoll to practise the basics before progressing to Cassidy Tow.
On the mountain you will find three high-speed rope tows.
- Cassidy Tow runs at a slower speed on a wide-open sunny slope, perfect for first time rope tow users.
- Temple Tow is faster and steeper than Cassidy Tow and the best way to gain vertical credits towards Downhill Tow quickly.
- Downhill Tow takes you to the ridgeline and enables you to ski or ride a variety of intermediate and advanced terrain.
From here experienced and equipped skiers and boarders will find many backcountry hiking and ski touring options. Courses at Temple Basin are run by the New Zealand Snow Safety Institute, it is a fully immersive experience to stay on the mountain and take part in instruction there. Professional courses are offered for those wishing to up-skill in mountaineering, back-country skiing and riding, or general alpine and rope-work skills. Course fees include on-mountain accommodation and meals as well as Temple Basin Ski Club membership. The lecture room in the lodge provides stunning views and at the end of the day you’ll likely be sharing the dinner table with long-standing Temple Basin crew.
Each season in September Splitfest is held providing a week of events tailored for Split-boarders from those just starting out to those looking to venture further.
Whatever your ability, learn the ropes at Temple Basin this season!
