School Holiday Fun at the Ski Selwyn Six
If you're looking to burn off some energy or just relax in nature these school holidays the Ski Selwyn Six have lots of opportunities to enjoy the mountains.
Porters Ski Area are open for the season and will kick of their Ski School Programme for all levels this next week. Check out some of the good times from 2018 in the video below or read our feature on the Ski School Programme here.
Porters is a great place to learn to ski with uncrowded areas that allow for easy progression from the beginner slopes. As well as the ski school programme there is a dedicated professional team of ski instructors offering both one on one and group lessons. More experienced skiers and boarders will enjoy the groomed and off-piste runs from the top of the mountain, don't forget to take the short hike to the very top to enjoy the spectacular views of Lake Coleridge.
If you're looking to stay a night or two Porters have their own lodge on the ski area access road with private or bunkrooms. There you'll also find a cafe and bar so you can let someone else do the cooking for you. Check out the Porters website for more information skiporters.co.nz.
The remaining Ski Selwyn Six are on hold to open as soon as they receive enough snow. Broken River have opened up accommodation for the school holidays with kid-friendly movies and games in the evenings. How cool would it be to stay up there when the snow arrives! This is also a great place to spot kea, go for walks and truly feel like you're getting away from it all. Contact Broken River by email for more information or to book email@example.com.

Forest Lodge on the Mt Cheeseman access road is also open for bookings. One of the drawcards is the historic, natural ice rink located right next to the lodge. It is well and truly frozen and has already hosted curling and ice hockey games this winter. Forest Lodge offers self-catered bunkrooms and you can find out more and book here.
All of the ski areas are in close proximity to the many natural wonders of the Selwyn district. Kura Tawhiti (Castle Hill) is a popular spot for a walk and picnic lunch, as is Cave Stream Scenic Reserve. There are many longer, more challenging walks to explore too, or just chill out and enjoy the views from the warmth and comfort from one of the ski area lodges.
