The Neon PomPom
A ‘greatest hits’ package of Cantabrian winter-sports action! They’ll tailor your itinerary to wring the last ounce of goodness from the vagaries of weather, snow, fitness, ability and enthusiasm.
Canterbury lacked a fully-optioned, luxury winter-sports smorgasbord until Simon and Tom took flight like the Haast’s Eagle of old; soaring over the Canterbury Plains in the endless quest for awesome. This is as close as you can get to stepping straight into a best-of Kiwi winter experience… You soak up the good times, they deal with everything else! www.neonpompom.co.nz
Neon PomPom operates a backcountry ski touring and freeski acadamey business from their lodge nestled behind Terrace Downs outside Methven. Operators Simon and Tom grew up skiing these mountains, and have spent their lives finding the best lines and stashes in the Craigieburn Ranges. They have a few different options when it comes to skiing and snowboarding packages, ranging from 3 nights, 2 days up to 6 nights, 5 days. If that seems a bit structured, you can also customize your own trip from $650pp/day
High Peak Heli is Neon PomPom’s big brother, and was founded with the intention of making Neon PomPom a one stop shop for backcountry adventures in the South Island. Being a heli-ski operator, High Peak Heli has access to some of the best untouched slopes in the Craigieburns, and the knowledge and ability to get you in and out safely.
Neon PomPom Freeski Academy
For those skiers and boarders looking to take their big-mountain riding to the next level, we invite you to consider the Neon PomPom Freeski Academy.
Former professional freeskier, Freeride World Tour athlete and Neon PomPom founder Tom Dunbar will take you on a custom program with the express purpose of making you a better, safer, stronger big mountain freeskier. All you need to do is bring the right attitude and a willingness to learn.
Our ‘classroom’ is the back country mecca that is the Canterbury Club Fields. The ungroomed off-piste nature of these ski areas, with their big mountain terrain and abundant hiking opportunities, makes them the ideal training grounds for the sort of skills Tom teaches.
Whether it is to master a powder turn, learn a new trick, ski big mountain lines or just push your own boundaries, Tom’s combination of coaching skills, professional skiing experience and skiing ability will have you breaking new ground and getting more out of your sport than you ever thought possible.
The standard duration for the program is 6 nights / 5 days skiing. There is also the opportunity to ski on the arrival and departure days by special arrangement.
The course covers the following topics via on-mountain instruction, video analysis and lodge seminars:
• Technical Skiing Tuition
• Line Selection
• Speed Control and Snow Management
• Air Awareness and Landing Techniques
• Decision Making and Heuristics
• Backcountry Awareness
• Risk Management
The standard Neon PomPom Freeski Academy Program is $3400 per person for one or $2900 per person in a double or twin share room. The cost is inclusive of all expenses apart from ski hire, as this varies between each individual.
